A child sleeps in a hammock. Little has changed in the Wakhan Corridor over the centuries. #Afghanistan#WakhanCorridor#Afghan

Wakhan Corridor

Horses graze freely in the lush meadows in this valley, unaware of the snow-capped Pamir mountains brushing the sky at the border of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. Over those mountains lay Marco Polo’s destination, the fabled empire of China. From my book on Marco Polo. Going through my archives and working on a new, expanded Silk Road project. #Afghanistan#WakhanCorridor#horses#pamirmountains

Wakhan Corridor

Opium was once smoked openly along the Wakhan Corridor here. Banned in 2000, opium production in Afghanistan now is on the rise again, frustrating the government’s attempts to eradicate it. #Afghanistan#WakhanCorridor#Afghan#badakhshan

Like Father, Like Son: Three-year-old Adiya practices his archery skills, imitating his father an excellent archer himself, in the Mongolian tradition. With 15-stops of Dynamic Range the new Sony A7R lV was able to capture this scene shot from inside of the tent remarkably, resulting in smooth, natural gradations ranging from deep shadows inside, to the highlights outside.  EXIF: 1/500sec, f/4.0, ISO800 #SonyAlpha#A7RIV  + #SonyG#SEL1224G@sonysingapore   #InnerMongolia#yurt#Mongolian

What a difference an hour makes. Sparks Lake moments after sunrise when warmer air burns off the low hanging fog, adding another layer of light. #SonyKandoTrip#SonyKando#SonyKando2019#bealpha@sonyalpha

Photographers working the dawn on Sparks Lake, Oregon, during Sony Kando 3.0 last week. Pick a great picture place, and they will come.  In fact, four hundred content creators came to Sunriver, Oregon to enjoy the sights, scenes, seminars and shoots at this annual event. Kando embodies Sony’s philosophy and roughly translated means “the power to move people emotionally”. And Sony does not disappoint! #SonyKandoTrip#SonyKando#SonyKando2019#bealpha@sonyalpha

Fishing with dolphins in Takaung, Irrawaddy River: here the dolphins are famous for helping fishermen. The fishermen summon the dolphins to chase fish close to their boats by rhythmically tapping the sides of the boat with a stick or jingling their nets. When they see the dolphin crest the surface, the nets are cast and the dolphin is rewarded with some of the catch. Unfortunately, the nets came up empty, as well as a good photograph of the dolphin, which stayed a good 20 meters away. #Irrawaddy#Myanmar#riverlife#Mandalay

Inle Lake, Myanmar

Magic moment or tourist set up? Both. The famed fishermen of Inle lake are now actors for tourist cameras, paid for by tour operators. Why fish when you can pose for a lot more money. But it still takes a good photographer to capture the right moment when subject, light, and composition come together. Saw many a good frame from my group of workshop shooters, but not one real fishermen catching fish with a dip net. My next workshop will be in Hokkaido, Japan from February 2-16, 2020, a winter photography workshop. Go to the “Workshops” Story Highlight on my profile for more info and to sign up. #inlelake#myanmar#burma#photoworkshop

At Sony Kando, the yearly event for Sony content creators. For now, a throwback to my trip to India with my Sony A9. Women learn traditional dance at Kerala Kalamandalam, the University of Art and Culture in Cheruthuruthi, Thrissur. The school has a special emphasis on the major classical dance performing arts of the southern states of India. Sony’s Eye Autofocus technology locked onto and tracked the eyes of the center dancer, even with the constant motion of the dance, ensuring sharp focus where it counts, the eyes. EXIF: 1/125sec, f/5.6, ISO2500 #SonyAlpha#A9  + #SonyGMaster#SEL2470GM#SonyEyeAF@sonysingapore   #SonyKandoTrip#SonyKando#SonyKando2019#bealpha@sonyalpha
