To mark Global Climate Strike, in the next week I'll be sharing images from my project "Vanishing Land", a body of work dedicated to capturing the impact of climate change on the Arctic landscape and communities in the Northwest Territories. // Shore erosion on Pelly Island, August 2019. In places like Pelly you are surrounded by the sounds of dripping and splotching as the exposed permafrost thaws away. You can smell it. You have to watch where you put your feet because there are deep crevasses in the tundra where the undercut blocks are beginning to separate from the island. I've been photographing coastal erosion in this region since 2017 and one of the biggest challenges I face as a photographer is conveying that we basically live on frozen mud up here, and that’s why this environment is so incredibly fragile and prone to erosion. The cliffs in my photographs are not rock. The ground beneath our feet is frozen silt and organic matter – and the only thing holding it all together is ice. That’s why you can see very significant changes in the landscape unfold over weeks, or even days. #fridaysforfuture#everydayclimatechange#tippingpoint

👇 🇪🇸Read caption below🇺🇸👇⁣ ⁣ ▶️ Around half of the solar radiation that the Earth receives is absorbed on the surface of the Earth, the other half is absorbed by the Atmosphere or bounces back to space. ⁣ ☀️➡️🌎➗2️⃣⁣ ⁣ ▶️ The surface of the earth does emit back radiation (heat♨️) but only 10% of this radiation escapes into space🚀, the other 90% is absorbed by clouds and by Greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere☁️. Some of the GHGs are : Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N20), Ozone (O3), Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Water vapor (H2O).☝️⁣ ⁣ ▶️ SHORT-WAVE radiation emitted by the sun☀️ passes through Greenhouse gases but LONG-WAVE radiation emitted by the surface of the earth is absorbed by them🌍. Subsequently the GHGs re-emit the energy as LONG-WAVE radiation in all directions and about half of the re emitted radiation by the gases is directed back toward the surface of the earth➡️🌍. ⁣ As a result a continual exchange of energy takes place between the surface of the earth and the atmosphere above it.↕️⁣ ⁣ ▶️ The LONG-WAVE radiation containted in this exchange causes the warming effect known as the greenhouse effect.🔄🔂☀️🌡️⁣ --------⁣ ⁣ 🇪🇸⁣ ⁣ ▶️ Alrededor de la mitad de la radiacion solar que la tierra recibe, es absorbida en la superficie, la otra mitad es absorbida por la atmosfera o escapa de nuevo al espacio.

A group of young Forest Firefighters take a short break in front of a shack before to put out a fire in the outskirts of Quitunuquiña, a small community in the Chiquitania dry forests, a transition zone between the Amazon and the Gran Chaco lowlands in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Late August 2019.  So far, Bolivian wildfires have destroyed more than three million hectares of forest since August, according to official reports, while the government is under pressure by several sectors of the population to declare a national emergency. • • • • • • • • #fire#wildfire#raging#forestfire#Bolivia#SOSchiquitania#Chiquitania#volunteer#robore#forest#amazon#dry#landscape#ClimateChange#contemporaryissue#environmental#issue#burn#everydayclimatechange#photojournalism#southamerica#nature#naturalenvironment#onassignment#BBC#jungle#trees#damage#drought

“One aspect of the depletion of salmon is that its a food resource not only for humans but other species. Science has shown that fish are the ones that built the environment. Their bodies are used by the animals and such, to spread the nutrients from the rivers to the forests. The fish are the builders of the environment. The young bear gets a fish and takes it into the forest because the bigger bear will take it away from him, and the birds do the same thing.” –Gerald Michel aka “Bobo”, Land Resource Coordinator for Xwisten (Bridge River) Indian Band, August 2019  Part of #thelastsalmonrun  with @insidenatgeo

Tomorrow our climate strike begins, a week where we as a community, being a collective noun for man kind, take a fragment of responsibility for the damage we are doing to our earth. The hole we’re creating in the protection we’re freely granted from the sun. But when will we realise that striking is no good without education, that striking is no good without the understanding of politics. When will we stop; believing that writing a sign and chanting that the “climate will not change unless we change” will make a fantasy of difference; so many of us don’t know where to begin that change ourselves. Yes as a community we can change individually, yes within society we can promote ideas amongst ourselves of what limitations we can put into place, which restrictions we can tie ourselves down to BUT ultimately NOTHING will change without our politicians PRIORITIES first. Where mass issues could be funded by our taxes currently going to broadband, where critical aspects of destruction and pollution could be abolished before our connections to the EU if politics would look at and after our earth rather than our land. The time and energy that we are collectively giving up, the money and dedication we are spending on this awareness - is no good unless we’re pointing it to the faces of creators of the law, the distributors of our rationed income and forcing our voices to be heard globally. So don’t judge someone you see walking into work next week, don’t glance at a student making their way into school because our world will continue to be ruled by money, profit, finance and politics whether our climate is tended to or not. And as many of you and us and we believe that with out a world there is none of the above - right now our world exists along with a benefits system at risk, a crumbling health system and many more struggles around family income. Getting by day to day is still the way of our world today and a huge number of our population must put well being before this problem that is outstandingly on its way to being recovered. Our hole is now beginning to close and our cuts in chemical deposit are making a desired difference. This is just the start of change.🌏🌳☀️

Bangladesh

The most fundamental question is whether a capitalistic society is capable of sharply reducing carbon emissions! Fixing the planet is going to be expensive but for our survival we have to pay the bill. • •  The world’s most difficult problem has a solution: Stop burning greenhouse gases • •  What should be done for the far greater number of people in poor and neglected communities? Like Bangladesh? • •  What penalties should Exxon and the other major oil and gas companies suffer for their sins? • •  If you include all the carbon extracted and supplied, just 90 companies are responsible for two-thirds of all the greenhouse gases emitted between 1751 and 2016 • •  With the hope to creating social change and help scientists and policymakers with environmental storytelling content, this year I collaborated with organisations, institutes, scientists, conventionalist. Every time I embark on a new project on Climate Emergency I asked myself why we have arrived in a critical interface between man and the natural world. There is a very simple solution to this, we need to love nature. Because human protect what they love. And to make people fall in love with nature we need compelling imagery and strong storytelling. • • • #globalclimatestrike#climatestrike#everydayeverywhere#everydayclimatechange#reportagespotlight#natgeoexplorer#natgeoexpeditions#climatecrisis#bangladesh#savetheplanet#womenphotograph#visuramedia
